Elsemorn is one of five planets orbiting a sun named Morn.
The planet has a single, massive continent with four subcontinents, several large islands, and many smaller ones. The continent is named Nefyar or Nefiaren by the dominant human cultures, Maederhyth by the dwarves, and Tumal Cirn or Thumal Sirin by the elves. Many simply call it Elsemorn, seeing no need to distinguish a single landmass from the planet.
The world once had different names. Most called it Ertheskel, though it was also known as Edreskel among the humans of Cordiana, Ardescyl in a dialect of elven, and Erthuskeld by one of the dwarven houses. During a cataclysmic event known as The Howling, magic imbued the world and it was thereafter called Elsemorn. The name Ertheskel is still used in some contexts, when referring to the planet itself or to times before the Howling.
For more information about the topics mentioned above, see the history of Elsemorn and what lies beyond Elsemorn.
Scholars commonly divide Elsemorn into four subcontinents: Allesley, Hestellend, Medoruul, and Suthal. It is said that these subcontinents are as distinct culturally as they are geographically, though there is much debate on both points.
The subcontinent of Allesley lies in northwestern Ertheskel, east of Medoruul and north of Suthal. It includes the lands of Burhi, Casseval, Feore, Loril, Surrna, Theresk, and Westbare, and the autonomous regions of Artieth, Falxmed, the Southern Wolds, and Therborous. It is said that Cordiana once existed along its western shores, though no trace of that land can be found today. Allesley is also known as the Hallas. Humans often call it the Heart.
The subcontinent of Medoruul lies in central Ertheskel, east of Allesley and west of Hestellend. It includes the lands of Fennleas, Kaldenhave, Kestemyr, Kisra, Miraalys, Reddes, Terinnia, and the autonomous region of Kozlodus. Sailing is primarily an activity employed for commerce and warfare. Due to the circumstances surrounding the fall of Cordiana, there are strong social taboos against sailing for exploration. Expeditions beyond the known boundaries of Elsemorn are, in many places, legally prohibited, or they simply lack funding. That being said, some expeditions have been attempted.
Journeys to the east and west reported deep water with large or even monstrous creatures. There are few islands, and those that have been found are small, with no available fresh water. Many crews were forced to return home or die of thirst. Those who did not have never returned.
Trekkers to the north reported freezing temperatures and increasing sea ice. Eventually, the temperatures became deadly, and ships could not move through the grinding ice. Crews also reported few or no opportunities for food and water.
Expeditions to the south reported sweltering temperatures, humidity, and smoking sea geysers. The most daring explorers claimed to spot boiling seas and a wall of steam and fire, before starvation and thirst made them turn back.
